Tone-on-tone designs tend to neutralize the space and, if not executed properly, the space can feel a bit mundane.ĮJ: We are seeing a lot of design influenced by past decades, particularly the 1930s. I think a space should carry some weight and substance to it. This tends to be the most requested aesthetic from clients who want their spaces to breathe simplicity in an organic yet refined way. The use of alternating textures in monochromatic color palettes always delivers a timeless, inspirational approach that feels pure and welcoming. HB: What do you think is overrated in design?ĮJ: Although bold colors are in at the moment, neutral and minimalistic-inspired spaces are always a go-to in any era. I would love to see clients reach for a more old-world-meets-new-world aesthetic. Whether abstract, contemporary, or traditional, great artwork always adds presence to the overall design of a space. You will never find two identical pieces and to us, that is part of the storytelling in design. HB: Is there anything you try to always “sneak” into your designs or wish clients would ask for more?ĮJ: Marble! We always try to use it because each one is like a piece of art and one of a kind. We really focus on each bringing something different to our designs, while both maintaining a timeless and refined aesthetic. The rest was history.ĮJ: While I love to play with different styles, my designs tend to be more minimalist, and Ray takes a much more maximalist approach. RJ: Through my lovely wife! I was just walking out of the door one morning when she asked me if I wanted to be part of a Zoom call for a TV show. Long story short, a reel was created and pitched to Netflix, and here we are! He saw that I was married to my competitor and was interested in pitching a show about our day-to-day lives. HB: How did you become a part of Designing Miami?ĮJ: I had done some TV work in the past and stayed in contact with an executive producer through Instagram. This well-rounded knowledge and design experience make for the perfect backbone of my latest chapter at RAYMOND NICOLAS, where I formally serve as founder and creative director. ![]() ![]() In doing so, I have and also look forward to continuing spearheading projects of many kinds, including retail, commercial, hospitality, and high-end private residential. Motivated and inspired, I look to continue following my constant excitement for design by working and engaging with clients who seek a unique, thought-provoking, and timeless design. I now hope to act as a creative agent of change, using my platforms to amplify the creative minority voice and beckon for racial equality. Within a year of graduating from Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU), I founded and became co-owner of an interdisciplinary recognized interior design and architecture studio called RS3, where I explored, mastered, and nurtured my passion for high-end private residential and commercial design. Ray Jimenez: My passion for diversified design was present from a young age, leading me to pursue and complete a degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design in 2010. I have always felt passionate about interior design and believe it should be in constant harmony with the architecture. My professors always called me out for designing the interiors, telling me that it wasn’t necessary. During my studies, I gravitated toward interior design so much that I began creating design concepts for the interiors of my architecture projects. In my second year, I befriended the son of the dean of the architecture program and was curious to see what architecture was all about. I decided to study business since I knew this was something that would help me in the future. I graduated early at 16 after being homeschooled and immediately enrolled in Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. House Beautiful: How did you each get into interior design?Įilyn Jimenez: Originally, I wanted to become a lawyer with the eventual goal of becoming a judge. ![]()
